The Nevada Press Association held
their annual awards banquet in Virginia City on Oct. 15.
During that awards ceremony, it was announced that former Mesquite
editor Morris Workman won seven first-place awards, including the
coveted "Freedom of the Press" award.
It was the second time in five
years that Workman and Mesquite Local News won the prestigious award
which recognizes superior achievement in Editorial writing, a
fitting career bookend after Workman won the "Freedom of the Press"
award in his first year of eligibility in 2007. The award is
presented to only two newspapers in the state each year, including
one for daily newspapers and one for weekly newspapers.
Workman also won six other awards
for Class III, which is for weekly newspapers with a circulation of
6,000 or less.
For the second consecutive year
and the third time in the last four years, Workman won "Best Local
Column" for his "Workman Chronicles," a weekly humor column.
Workman also won the category for
"Best Editorial Writing" for the second year in a row. It was
the third time in the last five years that he received the award.
He also captured the top spot for
"Best Investigative Story" for the second consecutive year, winning
the 2011 award for his expose' on the failed Desert Falls sports
complex and the city's acceptance of a post-dated check for the
project from developers.
Workman also received the award
for "Best Spot News Story" and "Best Multimedia Story" for his
coverage of the Donna Fairchild murder-suicide.
The award for "Best News Photo
Coverage" went to Workman for his up-close photos of Scenic
firefighters extinguishing a travel-trailer fire in Mesquite.
As one of the founders of
Mesquite Local News daily news site and weekly print newspaper in
2006, Workman has personally received a total of 21 Nevada Press
Association first-place awards between 2007 and 2011. Overall,
MLN has received 29 first place awards during that time period,
along with recognition for numerous second and third place finishes.
The editor left Mesquite Local
News in June of this year after his contract was not renewed by
Stephens Media, the company which purchased the newspaper from
Workman and co-founding partner Cindi Delaney in 2009.
